Annie's Story

It was Lady/Annies lucky day on Tuesday Oct 18 when she was found wandering on Woodside Road and
Middlefield.  She was picked up and carried to Kathryn Blink.  It was her lucky day Kathryn knew exactly what to do
for this lucky dog that was so very thin, her toenails were curled in to the pads of her feet, she was exhausted and
dehydrated.  Kathryn called her partner in crime Paula Johnson and the two of them cut her toenails so that she
could walk a little easier.  Than Paula took her home and bathed her.  Lady/Annie knew it was her lucky day and
stood like the gentle dog that she was.  When Lady/Annie was shown a crate with a big sigh of relief  as if to say
“this is my lucky day and I’m safe”, and curled into the soft bed and slept the peaceful sleep of a lucky dog.  She
was taken to the vet and the vet thought she was in good shape considering everything she had been through.  By
the callouses on her body they thought she was an outside dog that had not had much care in the last few years.
The vets think she was around 11 but hard to tell because of the poor condition she was in.  The next few days
Lady (as she was named because she was such a Lady through it all) seemed to perk up.

Than on October 25 was another lucky day for this lucky dog three wonderful people (Liz her sister, Nancy and
Nancy's husband Kevin) came in to her life.  They took her home to Buddy and Isabel (the dal’s they already had)
and gave her a wonderful home.  They renamed her Annie.  Due to her age and lack of previous care she was not
as stable on her feet so they carried her up and down three flights of stairs every time she needed to go out. (they
live in San Francisco).  She walked every day with them and Buddy and Isabel and was getting stronger by the
day.   She was very happy to be a part of this wonderful family.   They took her to Tahoe and to the beach.   Then
on December 5 when Nancy came home at lunch to take her out she was slightly paralyzed on one of her back
legs.  Liz rushed her to the vet.  They gave her a cortisone shot and put her on prednisone.  They were hoping that
it was just a pinched nerve.  Here is an excerpt of the emails that we received:

“We have had the most wonderful time with her. Her spirit is an Inspiration however we don't want her in any pain.”

I am heading home to work - for the next couple of days to stay with her, but will be checking email, and phone
messages.

My heart is so heavy - I want some more time with her, so does my sister but I want you to know we gave her
comfort, and so much love” -

Thank you all so much for your support the last couple of days. It has meant so much to Nancy, Kevin and me.

You all are so wonderful for showing her love, and helping her in her path to happiness as well. It shows me that
there is still good in this world.

We will love her forever.

I don't know how to repay your kindness, just please know that she was loved so much in her short time with all of us.

Unfortunately since I had brought Annie into the vet on Monday - there hasn't been any improvement - and poor
thing can't walk at all without falling over. She can't really sit up either.

We just don't want her to suffer - she has done enough of that in her little life.

We are so attached to her, and she has been given so much love here we are going to miss her so much. I just
wanted you to know that her sweet little soul will be remembered forever in my heart, and this home will miss her
fighting spirit. I just wish we had more time with her, and that she got to experience more of our love, and a
comfortable life.

Annie did get to go to Tahoe for a weekend, walk at Stern Grove with the other dogs, get endless amounts of hugs
and kisses, watch TV on the couch with us most nights, and receive her very own dog tag so she wouldn't get lost
ever again.

I wanted to let you know that Annie is in heaven, and that she passed without being alone. We were there with her
until the end last night. She touched us so much, and I thank all of you so much for bringing her into our lives.

We took her to the beach yesterday, and let her stand out over the dunes, and watch the waves into the horizon,
and let her know that she would be running soon with all of her friends. It is a memory that I will have embedded in
my mind forever as peaceful, and beautiful. “
